Farmhouse White Round Table
The work continues in the workshop as I'm getting ready for the Food for Families Fundraiser. Today, I have a busy day in the Morgantown area, so I won't have a paintbrush in my hands. I'll be delivering a lovely pair of French provincial nightstands to a client, posting flyers for the fundraiser at Morgantown Market, checking out the fundraiser venue, meeting a new client, returning stuff at Walmart, hitting the bank...you get the idea! I don't live far from Morgantown, but it's nice to be able to take care of a bunch of errands all in the same area, you know? So while I'm busy doing all of that, you can take a look at another piece I finished up!
This round side table was an ideal piece for a Milk Paint makeover. It was made from rustic barn wood that had a lovely texture.
I wanted to create a chippy white finish using Farmhouse White Milk Paint, but if I painted it on right away, the raw wood would soak it up and it wouldn't chip. Sometimes I want that to happen, but not on this piece. Its rustic character was crying for chippy paint!
To force chipping, my Mom and I brushed on Miss Mustard Seed's Beeswax Finish here and there randomly to create a surface the Milk Paint would resist. I had her use long strokes up and down the legs and we dotted the surface of the top and bottom here and there. There wasn't a rhyme or reason to where we applied it.
My Mom painted this piece all by herself! (She's becoming quite the pro.) Giving her instructions for this piece was funny to watch. I told her to lay the paint on thicker than usual, not to worry if the paint is a little chunkier than usual, and to avoid over brushing the paint. Essentially, I said to lay the paint on thick and leave it alone. Her face was so funny because everything I told her to do was basically the opposite of what we'd been doing so far. "Are you sure?" she asked me. "Trust me." I replied. "It's going to look amazing."
And I was right!
I got my beautiful chippy finish with the fresh white feel of Farmhouse White. Boo yah!
The chippy look perfectly suits this rustic little table. To seal it, I chose Tough Coat.

I picked Tough Coat for a few reasons. First, it will seal in all of that yummy chippy Milk Paint.
Second, it will give the table a bit more protection. Tables are high-traffic pieces and they're meant to put things on, so I wanted to make sure I used a finish that could hold up to lamps, clocks, books and drinks (with coasters underneath, of course!).
Finally, because Tough Coat is non-yellowing, I was confident that it wouldn't give the bright Farmhouse White an amber tone over time. Oh, and it has a matte finish, so I got a lovely flat look with no shine at all!

The top has some beautiful spots where you can truly appreciate the texture and grain of the wood.
This piece will be coming with me to the fundraiser on 2/2 and 2/3. It's a great height to use at the top of the stairs, next to your sofa, or in a hallway with a pretty mirror perched above it.
