Victorian Writing Desk
About a month ago, I visited a new antique place that was highly recommended to me by a few people. You know if more than 2 or 3 people tell you that it's worth it, then it's probably awesome. Well, I'm happy to report that the place WAS awesome and I plan to go back as soon as I'm in need of more furniture to work on. If you saw my latest Instagram story, then you know that I'm good to go on project pieces for a while!
When I posted photos of this Victorian Writing Desk on Instagram, one of my regular customers sent me a message and asked me if she could purchase it and have me paint it to her specifications.
I was more than happy to do so, and if you ever see a piece I'm working on through social media, please feel free to send me a message and claim it for customization!
Doesn't this desk have the prettiest lines? The scallops and flowing silhouette were the main reason why I bought it. That, and the sturdy construction won me over immediately.
My client wanted me to strip the top down to the raw wood and stain it something that wasn't so red and dark. I used General Finishes Walnut Water Based Stain and sealed it with my usual finish of choice - High Performance Topcoat in Satin.
For the body, she requested bright Farmhouse White by Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint. I distressed the edges to bring out the carved details and curvy shape of the writing desk.
I sealed everything with Tough Coat to handle the high traffic of opening and closing drawers. It's looking much lighter and brighter with its new makeover!
What a profile shot, eh?
The freshly finished walnut top looks ridiculously yummy.
I like how the character is still there with a fresh new finish. It looks old, but it's new!
It's even pretty from the back!
I think that the prettiest aspect of this desk is the hardware. Look how precious these brass finger pulls are! I want to eat them up!
Let's take a closer look, shall we?
Like.....seriously! Those are just too cute!
The drawers have lovely dovetail joinery too, and each drawer is chunky and sturdy.
Even the backsplash on the top has dovetail joinery!
With five drawers to choose from, my client won't have any issues with storage!
I say it's looking much better now, wouldn't you say?
If you'd like to replicate this look, you can shop for Farmhouse White Milk Paint and Tough Coat from my displays at Morgantown Market or Painted Table Designs. You can find your nearest supplier of General Finishes products here. If you're going to be in the Morgantown area this weekend, I'll be at Morgantown Market if you'd like to chat about a project or anything related to Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint!
