A Dusty Glider
I love when friends find pieces of furniture for me! When I get a text or call saying they found something they think I will enjoy working on, it makes me feel super loved. Not only did they take the time to haul some piece of furniture from the side of the road to their house, but they saved me an trip to a thrift store and essentially did my shopping for me!
Such was the story of how I came to possess my new dusty glider.
My friends had every intention of fixing it up and using it for their home, but they recently had a new bundle of joy enter their lives and things obviously got busy. Working on a project like this was the last thing on their minds, and so I got a text asking if I wanted the glider. It took me all of 2 seconds to say, "heck yes" after seeing a picture or two.
I'm not sure if you can tell, but the bottom rocking mechanism had a rubber bike tire wrapped around it. At first, my friends thought it was holding everything together and the mechanism needed to be replaced or repaired.
After taking the bike tire off and giving it a very gentle and somewhat precarious test rock, it seemed like everything was working just fine. Screws need to be tightened up a bit, but overall it was gliding as it should. Perhaps the bike tire was just holding everything still?
There were remnants of a leather strap on the bottom.
And the craftsmanship was absolutely gorgeous. I totally ooh'd and aah'd over the details on this piece.
Don't the carvings remind you of wings?
I'm not 100% sure how old this piece is, but nails like this let you know it's definitely not from the last decade or two.
So beautiful!
There was a curious piece of information stamped onto both metal pieces on the bottom. They read "Pat.Pending May 28.88"
I think it was safe to assume that the year was NOT referring to 1988.
I'm still thinking through my plans on this one. It needs a new seat and a cushion. I'm not sure if I'm going to paint it or not. If I do, I'm definitely using Miss Mustard Seed's Milk Paint. It would work wonders on a piece like this!
One thing's for sure...
I know I will dust.
